Elon Musk has announced that his AI startup xAI’s new project ‘Grokipedia’ will be unveiled within two weeks. On October 5th, Musk stated via his platform X (formerly Twitter) that “a preliminary beta version 0.1 of Grokipedia will be released,” claiming it will be a far more advanced form than existing collaborative encyclopedias.

Grokipedia was first announced as a project on September 30th, with Musk describing it as an essential step toward xAI’s ultimate goal of understanding the essence of the universe.

The core of Grokipedia lies in AI’s ability to autonomously gather, analyze, and reorganize information into a reliable form. At the ‘The All-In Podcast’ summit in September, Musk revealed that the platform analyzes various data sources, including Wikipedia articles, various materials, and PDFs.

The AI model ‘Grok’ reviews the collected materials, evaluates the veracity of each information piece, and categorizes them as ‘true’, ‘partially true’, ‘false’, or ‘incomplete’. Based on this, the content is rewritten to present ‘the most accurate version of the truth’ as determined by the system.

This idea was solidified when venture investor David Sacks proposed developing it into a commercial service during the event. Musk responded that it was “a very intriguing proposal,” showing a positive stance.

Musk plans to operate Grokipedia as an ‘Open Source Knowledge Repository,’ meaning it will be transparently open for anyone to examine how its data and algorithms work. He emphasized that it would be a new model replacing the closed structure of existing collaborative encyclopedias.

Musk’s criticism of Wikipedia has been ongoing for a long time. He has claimed that Wikipedia has a politically biased editing structure and censors certain information. Last October, he made a sarcastic comment, saying he would donate a billion dollars if Wikipedia changed its name to ‘Dikipedia.’ Recently, he agreed with a post by venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya describing Wikipedia as a “mass psychology manipulation tool.”

Musk’s critique aligns with long-standing debates surrounding Wikipedia. Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger argued after leaving the project in 2002 that a politically inclined group of administrators exists, excluding contributors with differing opinions.

While Wikipedia has the advantage of being open to everyone, it also presents issues with incomplete fact-checking. Biased contributions and distortions of controversial topics have been repeatedly pointed out.

To address these limitations, Musk designed the system to have AI evaluate the information instead of human editors. However, the concept of AI determining ‘truth’ itself could spark further controversies. If the algorithm’s criteria are opaque or the learning data is already biased, the outcomes could also be biased.

Grokipedia is part of xAI’s expansion strategy. Musk mentioned plans to unveil AI-produced games by the end of next year and that a dedicated game studio is being established for this purpose.

He envisions xAI as a comprehensive AI company capable of competing in various domains with OpenAI. Musk’s philosophy is that “AI must go beyond understanding human language to interpreting and restructuring knowledge.”

Although Grokipedia’s interface and release schedule are yet to be determined, if Musk’s “beta release within two weeks” is realized, a new competitive landscape in AI-based knowledge service markets is anticipated to emerge.

If a system materializes where AI evaluates and rewrites information independently of human editing, discussions around the objectivity and reliability of information are expected to deepen significantly.
