OpenAI will discontinue support for the GPT-4 model in its AI service ‘ChatGPT’ starting April 30, fully transitioning to the latest model, GPT-4o. After this date, ChatGPT Plus users will not be able to select the existing model, as the new model will be applied by default.
GPT-4o is a high-performance model with multimodal capabilities that can process text, images, and audio simultaneously. Its performance has been enhanced in various areas such as command comprehension, conversational fluency, and code generation accuracy. OpenAI is pushing for a transition to an automatic model selection system to ensure users receive optimal responses without complex settings.
GPT-4 has served as the core engine of ChatGPT for two years since its initial release in March 2023. However, with technological advancements, the development of next-generation models like GPT-4.1, o3, and o4-mini has occurred simultaneously, and GPT-4 will no longer be included in general user services. However, it will still be accessible through developer APIs.
This move is part of OpenAI’s unified AI strategy that has been previously announced. Sam Altman, CEO, stated, “AI should automatically provide the best performance for the situation without requiring users to select a model.”
ChatGPT has recently introduced a ‘Memory’ feature that remembers conversation history, making personalized responses that reflect context possible and providing a more intuitive user experience to its 400 million weekly users.
OpenAI plans to continue expanding its high-performance model lineup and develop technology that improves both performance and efficiency.
