Seoul Museum of History announced that it will hold an exhibition titled “Depth of Letters, 1.5mm,” focusing on Seoul’s seal culture, from July 1 to 27 in the first-floor lobby exhibition hall.

This exhibition is part of the “Seoul Future Heritage Record” project and is based on the 2023 report “Seoul’s Seal Shops.” It reconstructs the history of Seoul’s seal shops and the lives of its citizens through three themes: “From Signature to Seal,” “Letters Engraved by Hand,” and “Seoul’s Old Seal Shops.”

The first part introduces the background of seals being used as a personal symbol through old documents from the Joseon Dynasty and seal shop photo materials from the Japanese colonial period, along with the trends in the seal industry due to institutional changes. The second part displays the materials and tools of seals based on the production processes of master craftsmen in seal art. The third part contains stories of seal artists still active in Seoul’s old seal shops, alongside videos of the Changsin-dong seal street.

In the epilogue space, a seal experience corner and a photo zone are set up to encourage visitor participation. Visitors can try stamping with rubber imprints produced by the Yeonggwang Injaesa, and take commemorative photos with a large seal shop sign.

The exhibition is free, and viewing hours are from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The museum is closed every Monday.
