Seoul City is significantly expanding its “Sugar Reduction Practice Schools” from the existing 2 schools to 100 schools to help students form healthy eating habits. Through this initiative, they plan to provide low-sugar meals and operate the “Less Sweet 9988 Campaign” to focus on reducing sugar intake among adolescents.
From March 18 to 24, Seoul City will publicly recruit 100 elementary, middle, and high schools. The selected schools will receive a subsidy of 1 million won each to operate sugar reduction campaigns and educational programs tailored to their characteristics. The schools selected will be individually notified on March 25.
Starting in April, the selected schools will operate as “Sugar Reduction Practice Schools.” The 5th of each month is designated as “Daily Fifty Practice Day,” where low-sugar meals are provided, and healthy meals including seasonal fruits replace sugary processed foods. Posters and banners guiding low-sugar practices will be installed to encourage voluntary participation from students.
Each school will participate in the “Less Sweet 9988 Campaign” through its own programs and encourage students to form healthy eating habits through initiatives such as practice challenges and club activities.
Kim Tae-hee, the Director of Citizen Health Bureau of Seoul City, stated, “We will actively support adolescents in reducing sugar intake and practicing healthy eating habits,” adding, “We hope schools at all levels will actively participate to bring about changes for the healthy future of students together.”
