Overseas Scientific and Technical Talent Recruitment: Research and Support Institutions Collaborate to Boost Attraction Efforts

The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 18th that it held a meeting at the Korea Research Foundation to discuss the attraction of outstanding foreign talent. This meeting was organized to identify the field needs of research institutions and universities and discuss government policy directions to support them, amid an urgent need to attract overseas talent.

Five science and technology specialized universities, including KAIST, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST), Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), and POSTECH, along with 11 institutions such as the National Research Council of Science & Technology, the University of Science and Technology, the Institute for Basic Science, the Korea Research Foundation, the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies, and the Korea Industrial Technology Association, participated in the meeting.

Participating institutions presented the current status and plans for attracting overseas talent, shared success cases and challenges, and discussed improvement plans. The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to reflect the discussions in the future government policy formulation.

Lee Chang-yoon, the First Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, stated, “In the global talent war and demographic cliffs, attracting overseas talent is paramount to maintaining and enhancing research competitiveness. We will strive to accurately identify the talent attraction needs required in the field and to timely link various support measures.”

It is expected that this discussion will lead to substantial policy improvements for attracting outstanding foreign talent.
