From May 19 to May 25, the Korea Forest Service’s National Institute of Forest Science will host an exhibition titled “A Small Forest We Must Protect” at the Forest Museum in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul, in celebration of International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22.

This exhibition is designed to highlight the beauty and ecological value of Korea’s “special forest plant communities,” which are highly valued for conservation. These communities are small or rare forest plants at risk of extinction and hold significant importance in terms of forest biodiversity and ecosystem conservation.

The National Institute of Forest Science surveyed 613 communities nationwide and selected 100 to publish in “100 Selected Special Forest Plant Communities of Korea.” This exhibition features photographs of 72 communities with high biodiversity conservation value.

The displayed photographs document the unique characteristics of specific forest plant communities and convey the diversity and ecological traits of forests. The exhibition can be viewed alongside the Hongneung Arboretum Forest Interpretation program on the Forest e-Home website.

Choi Hyung-tae, head of the Forest Ecology Research Department, stated, “We hope to convey the diversity and preciousness of forest plant communities and expand social interest and participation in their conservation and management.”
