The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is promoting a pilot solution discovery project that can contribute to solving actual urban problems based on the smart city data hub established in metropolitan municipalities.

This project has been prepared to effectively solve various urban operation problems such as transportation, safety, and quarantine through the data hub. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport explained that solutions that can be jointly utilized are needed for data-based urban operations to spread nationwide without being limited to a single region.

The smart city data hub is a platform designed to link and analyze collected data such as traffic volumes, floating populations, crime reports, and CCTV information from local government agencies, allowing for the development of new services. Since 2022, the Ministry has been building data hubs centered on metropolitan areas, and they have secured cases where it has been used for purposes such as bus route optimization, crime prevention patrol route analysis, and tracking the movement of confirmed COVID-19 patients.

This call for entries focuses on discovering solutions with universality and practicality based on these empirical experiences. The target for the competition is metropolitan municipalities that have established data hubs, and preferential treatment will be given if basic municipalities collaborate to develop joint solutions. The Ministry plans to select a total of three locations and support each location with national funding of up to 1 billion KRW through a 1:1 matching method.

In particular, the Ministry will release the developed pilot solutions in an open-source format. This strategy aims to enable municipalities across the country to easily utilize these solutions to address similar problems.

Applications for the competition will be accepted from June 23 to 25, with the final selection results announced in July. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is announcing the project notice through the smart city portal and its own website.

Yoon Jong-bin, the head of the Urban Economy Division at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, “The data hub should now function as a practical tool for cooperation and problem-solving among municipalities, beyond the experimental stage. We hope that the discovery of joint solutions will lead to the spread of urban service models that improve the quality of life for citizens.”
