Seoul’s Jung-gu is installing a digital information platform called the ‘Media Pole’ in the Myeongdong area. As a key facility in the Myeongdong Square project, customized devices reflecting pedestrian flow and street structure will be installed in various locations.
The Media Pole is a complex information device combining a screen, CCTV, and emergency bell. It provides real-time life information like weather, fine dust levels, and local events, as well as tourist guides and media art content. Interactive content will also be applied to enhance two-way communication between citizens and tourists.

Large devices will be installed on Namdaemun-ro, while function-centric devices that prioritize pedestrian safety and convenience will be placed on Myeongdong Jungang-gil and Myeongdong 8-na-gil. ‘Following media’ specialized for route guidance will be deployed in front of Myeongdong Art Theater and near Exit 6 of Myeongdong Station.
The design is prioritized to harmonize with the urban landscape, with precise considerations regarding the device’s height, luminosity, and visual structure. The strategy aims to convey information and enhance the cityscape without visual overload.
On the 9th, a field briefing was held at the planned installation site by Jung-gu, attended by about 50 participants from Seoul City, the Myeongdong Square Secretariat, and the Media Pole installation contractor, to inspect the functionality, design, and safety.
On the 18th, Seoul City is scheduled to review outdoor advertisements for devices on Myeongdong Jungang-gil. Upon approval, construction will commence in May, with separate reviews proceeding sequentially for Namdaemun-ro and Myeongdong 8-na-gil areas.
Jung-gu expects the Media Pole to infuse vitality into Myeongdong’s commercial district by combining information delivery with visual content. It also anticipates benefits in guiding tourist routes and extending visitors’ stay times.
A Jung-gu official stated, “We aim to make Myeongdong a street people want to walk on and establish it as a digital media landmark.”
