The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is hosting the ’15th Korea-ASEAN Transport Cooperation Forum’ in Seoul from July 8 to 10. High-ranking officials from the transport ministries of the 10 ASEAN member countries, such as deputy ministers and directors general, attended this year’s forum.

Since 2010, the forum has been held annually to share South Korea’s transportation technology and policies and to strengthen transport cooperation with ASEAN countries. Through the forum, South Korea has introduced policies and technologies aimed at enhancing the digitalization and connectivity of transportation in ASEAN countries.

This year’s theme is ‘Foundational Solutions for Smarter and Safer Mobility in ASEAN.’ The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport highlighted that AI technology is being noted as a viable alternative transportation policy, even in countries lacking physical infrastructure.

The opening ceremony began with a welcoming speech by Park Sang-woo, Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Lee Sung-hae, President of the Korea Rail Network Authority, gave the welcoming address, and the Chief Representative of the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Myanmar, Win Khant, delivered congratulatory remarks. Following this, Chang In-kwon, Dean of the Jo Cheon-sik Graduate School of Mobility at KAIST, gave a keynote speech on ‘Using AI for the Realization of Smart Mobility.’

The forum’s official sessions consisted of four segments. The first session introduced the main directions of the ‘Korea-ASEAN Transport Cooperation Roadmap (2026-2030).’ ASEAN countries presented their plans to promote digitalization in the field of transport using AI technology, and the ASEAN Secretariat outlined the schedule for the establishment of the ‘ASEAN Transport Strategic Plan (2026-2060).’

From the second to the fourth sessions, cases and plans for the application of AI technology in land, air, and sea transportation were presented. This year, the maritime transportation sector was included in the discussions for the first time.

Through this forum, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport plans to share Korea’s AI-based transportation technology with ASEAN countries and discuss support measures through various international cooperations, such as official development assistance (ODA).

On July 9, after the forum, one-on-one business meetings between ASEAN country delegates and Korean companies will be held. Participants will visit the National Air Museum to experience Korea’s aviation history, current industry status, and future technologies.

On July 10, the 5th Korea-Malaysia Transport Cooperation Meeting will take place in Seoul. During the meeting, Korea’s transportation policies will be introduced, and ways to expand cooperation between the two countries will be discussed.
