The Korea Meteorological Administration announced on the 30th that it will hold the 2025 Weather Big Data Competition together with the Korea District Heating Corporation and Busan Fire and Disaster Headquarters.

This year’s competition, which marks its 11th iteration, will be conducted by analyzing and predicting public data in three domains: energy, safety management, and transportation, by integrating them with meteorological data.

In the energy domain, the challenge is to predict heat demand by combining data from the District Heating Corporation with meteorological data. In the safety management domain, it involves predicting the number of dispatches based on weather factors such as heavy rain and strong winds, by merging 119 emergency call data from the Busan Fire and Disaster Headquarters with meteorological data. The transportation domain uses subway passenger data to analyze subway congestion in response to weather changes.

The competition will accept applications from May 7 to June 9 through its official website. Anyone, whether individual or group, can participate, and multiple entries per theme are allowed. The deadline for submission of entries is June 27.

The preliminaries will be conducted through a document review on July 9, and the finals will be presented on August 6. The top three to four teams in each domain will be selected as the final winners.

The winners will receive certificates such as the Minister of Environment Award, the Korea Meteorological Administration’s prize, the Korea District Heating Corporation President’s Award, and the Head of Busan Fire and Disaster Headquarters Award, along with prize money of up to 3 million won. All winners will also be recommended to participate in the government-wide public data utilization startup competition.

Jang Dong-un, Director General of the Korea Meteorological Administration, said, “I hope that the participants’ creative ideas will make a tangible contribution to solving weather-related issues.”

Jeong Yong-ki, President of the Korea District Heating Corporation, said, “We hope to contribute not only to efficient energy supply but also to improving public convenience in daily life.”

Kim Jo-il, Head of Busan Fire and Disaster Headquarters, said, “By precisely analyzing weather and dispatch data through this competition, we expect to enhance on-site response capabilities.”
