Korea Electric Power Corporation (President Kim Dong-cheol), Seoul National University (President Yoo Hong-rim), and KT (CEO Kim Young-seop) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on March 19 at Seoul National University for the development and demonstration of AI technology specialized in the power industry. This agreement aims to enhance the efficiency and productivity of the power system by integrating AI technology to keep pace with the smartening of power grids and the expansion of distributed energy, in line with the changing energy industry environment.

Under the agreement, the three organizations will prepare and demonstrate a ‘Hybrid Cloud-Based AI Solution and Security System for the Power Industry.’ The core goal is to establish a foundation for innovating the power system by applying the learning and inference functions of generative AI to power grid operations. In addition, they plan to pursue medium to long-term cooperation in nurturing specialists in energy-AI convergence, activating new businesses and technologies based on AI, and more.

In terms of roles, Korea Electric Power Corporation will be responsible for establishing strategies for the development and utilization of AI specialized in the power industry, discovering AI-based converged new business models, and leading R&D demonstrations. Seoul National University will provide directions for the advancement of power systems, establish security standards, and be responsible for nurturing professional talent. KT will provide security technologies connected to cloud AI models and offer optimal AI solutions.

Particularly, Korea Electric Power Corporation plans to maximize the stability and efficiency of the power system by utilizing AI’s predictive and real-time response capabilities, and enhance national benefits by innovating electric customer services and developing new business models with other industries, including IT.

Kim Dong-cheol, President of Korea Electric Power Corporation, stated, “It is time to lead a great transformation in the energy industry through the convergence of AI-based technologies,” and added, “If the three institutions join forces through this agreement, the Korean power industry can establish itself as a first mover in the global energy market and lead new markets.”

Going forward, the three organizations plan to expand the scope of cooperation to include innovative ventures and startups, develop business models specialized in energy and AI solutions, and pursue joint entry into overseas markets. They are expected to contribute to creating future growth engines for the nation and accelerating digital innovation in the power industry.
