Seoul’s Jongno District is recruiting 40 members for a “Gardening Crew,” a citizen-participation project to cultivate urban green spaces. Applications are being accepted until July 29.
The Gardening Crew is part of the “Jongno Gardener Village Project,” a project to create public gardens in collaboration with Jongno District, Kakao Makers, and the non-profit organization “Forest for Life.” The project was launched after a partnership agreement was signed by the three institutions on June 18 at Cheongjin Park.
The target participants are citizens who are interested in gardening and can commit to regular activities. To apply, download the application form from the Forest for Life’s website or the QR code on the poster, fill it out and submit it via email to the designated contact. Final results will be individually notified on August 5.
The Gardening Crew will be responsible for the maintenance and management of public gardens established in four areas: Cheongjin Park, Bukchon, Seochon, and Sajik-dong. The activity period is from August 7 to the first week of November. Local garden designers will participate as lead gardeners to provide education and field training.
Citizens who complete all training courses will be officially named “Jongno Gardeners.” Jongno District plans to designate these citizens as the main stakeholders responsible for the local green environment.
Jongno District views this project as contributing to the recovery of the urban ecosystem and the spread of garden culture. The goal is to improve quality of life and community cohesion by creating urban green spaces driven by citizen participation.
Jong Mun-heon, the Mayor of Jongno District, expressed his hopes: “We hope that through activities to care for nature, citizens will feel peace and happiness in the urban environment,” and he also hopes it stimulates communication and collaboration within the community.
