The Seoul Geumcheon-gu Facilities Management Corporation has established a site for practicing the social value of urban agriculture. In commemoration of the 2025 ‘Day of Urban Agriculture,’ the corporation announced that it held a ‘Potato Planting Event for Sharing and Coexistence’ on its headquarters rooftop garden.
The event was organized to realize urban-rural cooperative initiatives and to highlight the value of urban agriculture. Employees participated voluntarily by planting potato seedlings, increasing their understanding of urban agriculture.
The corporation purchased potato seedlings from the ‘Taean Uju Agricultural Cooperative’ in Taean, Chungnam, establishing a distribution base between urban and rural areas. Using the available space in the city’s rooftop garden, the event practically demonstrated the potential of eco-friendly urban agriculture models.
The potatoes planted this time will be harvested at the end of June and will be entirely donated to the Geumcheon-gu Mental Health Welfare Center. The donated potatoes are expected to be used in psychological therapy programs for the center’s users, marking the expansion of urban agriculture beyond mere self-sufficiency to integrating with social welfare.
Director Lim Byung-ho stated, “Urban agriculture is a symbol of collaboration between urban and rural areas and a method for public institutions to fulfill their duty of sharing with the local community.” He further mentioned, “We will continue to take the lead in establishing the urban ecosystem and engaging in social contribution activities.”
