Seoul’s Dongjak-gu is actively pursuing plans to expand key arterial roads to alleviate chronic congestion and prepare for future traffic demand in the area.
The sections slated for expansion include Seodallo (Hukseok-dong to Sangdo 1-dong) and Seongdaero (Sangdo 3-dong to Sangdo 4-dong). Both sections currently have just 1 or 2 lanes in total, leading to severe congestion during rush hours, and there has been a continuous call for road environment improvements.
Notably, this area is witnessing active housing development projects such as redevelopment, rapid integrated planning (Sangdo 14-15 Districts), and Moa Town, which are expected to increase future traffic volume. In response, the district plans to expand each road to 3 or 4 lanes in total.
The project plans to expand the 580-meter Seodallo section from Hukseok Daycare Center to Sanghyeon Middle School from the current 2 lanes (width 8-10 meters) to 3-4 lanes (width 12-15 meters). The basic concept service has been completed, and feasibility studies and basic design services are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The 1-kilometer Seongdaero section from Seongdae Market (Sangdo-dong 324-1) to Jangseungbaegi-ro (Sangdo-dong 201-66) will be expanded from the current 1-2 lanes (width 8-10 meters) to 4 lanes (width 15-20 meters). The basic concept service is scheduled to proceed until November.
In addition, a city road project plans to expand some sections from Sadang-ro (Sungshin University Entrance Station to Solbat-ro Entrance, about 1.8 km) and Sangdo-ro (Boramae Station to Sangdo Station, 2.7 km) from 4-6 lanes to 6-8 lanes.
Dongjak-gu Mayor Park Il-ha said, “We will expand roads built long ago to suit the present day so that residents can travel without inconvenience,” and added, “We will continue to gradually resolve traffic bottlenecks to achieve ‘Dongjak with a well-connected network’.”
