The Baegak section of Seoul’s Bukhansan, part of the Hanyangdoseong (Seoul City Wall), has reopened after being closed for nine months due to a wall collapse. The hiking trail from Changuimun to the start of Cheongundae was restricted last July after the collapse but was reopened on the morning of April 4, 2025, following the installation of a detour route.

Immediately following the incident, the city of Seoul blocked access and conducted restoration work. With the detour established and safety checks completed, the trail has returned to a path similar to its original form. This section is a significant ridge of the Hanyangdoseong, blending historical symbolism with scenic views, attracting numerous visitors each year.

Bukhansan, also known by its historical name Baegaksan, served as the main mountain defending the north of Hanyang during the Joseon Dynasty. The Baegak section, linking Changuimun and Sukjeongmun, is one of the most crucial parts of the 18.6 km city wall, offering panoramic views of Gyeongbokgung, Inwangsan, and the Han River, making it both historically and geographically significant.
After the 1968 armed infiltration incident, the Bukhansan area was designated a military control zone, with civilian access prohibited for decades. From 2006, parts of the area began to be gradually opened, and following the removal of sentry posts and adjustments to security facilities, a new southern trail connecting the back gate of Samcheong Park to Cheongundae and Sukjeongmun was opened in 2022. This marked the almost complete opening of the circular city wall route.

The recently restored Baegak section is known for its repeating stairs and steep slopes, earning it the nickname “Stairway to Heaven.” Walking along the path of the Joseon-era city wall in the heart of the city allows visitors to experience the history of Seoul, and despite the physical demands, it remains a popular destination for many.
Currently, new buds and spring flowers are emerging on Bukhansan. On the first day of reopening, many citizens visited the Baegak section. An official from Hanyangdoseong stated that they would maintain a safe hiking environment through regular inspections and repairs.

Before embarking on the hike, it is advised to check weather conditions and recommended hours of use, as there are no lighting facilities after sunset, necessitating careful management of descent times. It is also recommended to wear basic safety equipment.
