“Something powerful is coming,” announced Greg Joswiak, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Global Marketing, in a teaser video posted on X (formerly Twitter) on October 14th. The brief video hinted at the upcoming release of a new generation MacBook featuring the next-generation ‘M5’ chip.
The video included the phrase “Coming soon” and showed a laptop silhouette shaped like the Roman numeral ‘V’, suggesting the introduction of Apple’s next-generation silicon chip, the ‘M5’. Joswiak added a word with five ‘M’s, “Mmmmm,” further indicating the arrival of the new chip.

This announcement aligns with a recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. He reported that Apple plans to unveil the MacBook Pro with the ‘M5 chip’ this week. With Apple’s teaser, the announcement is virtually official.
The M5 chip is the fifth generation of Apple’s self-developed silicon series. Following the M1 chip, which replaced Intel processors in 2020, the series evolved through the M2, M3, and M4 to the new generation.
According to currently available information, the M5 chip offers significantly improved power efficiency and graphics processing capabilities. Its enhanced AI computing features are expected to noticeably improve AI-based image editing and natural language processing speeds.
Bloomberg also noted that the iPad Pro equipped with the M5 chip might be announced this week. Unboxing videos of the new iPad Pro with the M5 chip have already surfaced on industry-related YouTube channels. However, Apple has not yet made an official statement regarding the iPad.
Furthermore, there is speculation that a new version of the ‘Vision Pro’ with the ‘faster chip’ may also be revealed. This new model is registering as an undisclosed device with the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC), indicating a likely upgrade with a new chip.

The M series chips from Apple are significant for more than just performance improvements. Since shifting from Intel chips to in-house designed chips in 2020, Apple has strengthened a closed ecosystem that integrates chip and software management. This enhances device connectivity, boosts energy efficiency, and maximizes hardware performance.
The M5 chip is a continuation of this strategy. It reportedly improves computing speed and thermal control performance over previous generations, significantly impacting MacBook battery life and iPad graphic task processing speeds. Industry experts describe the M5 not merely as a performance upgrade but as an ‘integrated chip’ evolved for the AI era.
The M5 chip ties closely with Apple’s next-generation operating systems, macOS Sequoia and iPadOS 18, both of which emphasize AI-based productivity features. Hence, the AI acceleration capabilities of the M5 are likely to become central to the actual user experience.
This new announcement and the possible upgrades to the Vision Pro, equipped with the M5 chip, could prove transformative. Apple introduced the Vision Pro mixed-reality (MR) headset earlier this year but faced challenges in popularizing it due to limited battery life and high cost.
The upcoming Vision Pro model is expected to feature enhanced processors for improved graphics processing and concurrent task handling. This comes amidst industry speculation, as FCC documents reveal significant differences in certain specifications compared to existing products, suggesting the application of the M5 or a variant of the M5 chip.

The M5 chip represents a pivotal shift, leading the ‘generation change’ across Apple’s entire hardware lineup. With major product lines like MacBook, iPad, and Vision Pro sharing the same chip architecture, integrated user experience is expected not only in performance but also in data and app compatibility.
Industry experts rate the M5 chip announcement as “a signal of Apple’s transition to a next-generation computing era centered on AI, breaking down device barriers once again.”
While Apple has not disclosed specific unveiling schedules, prices, or release dates, it is likely that M5-equipped products, including MacBook Pro and iPad Pro, will be sequentially announced within the week. The global community eagerly awaits the unveiling of the new MacBook, iPad, and the more powerful Vision Pro.
