Open Source refers to a development method in which the source code, the blueprint of software, is made available so that anyone can use and modify it. As the era of artificial intelligence accelerates, open source is being recognized as a key driver that speeds up technological innovation.

Open source began with the public release of a computer program’s source code. In general, software companies do not disclose their source code and instead provide only usage rights. By contrast, open source allows anyone to inspect the program’s internal structure, modify it, or add functions. Redistribution is also allowed. However, the conditions of the open source license must always be observed.

The concept of open source began to spread widely in the late 1990s. This was driven by growing recognition that a structure in which developers around the world improve technology together could produce faster innovation than a system in which one company monopolizes control. Today, open source technologies are widely used in the internet, cloud services, mobile operating systems, and even artificial intelligence.

A representative example is Linux. Linux has become a core operating system in the global server market and cloud infrastructure. A large share of web services and data centers operate on Linux-based systems. Companies optimize systems to fit their own environments based on publicly available source code.

Open source influence is also expanding rapidly in the AI industry. In the past, it was common for companies to use AI models developed by major technology firms only in limited ways. Recently, however, the number of open AI models has increased, significantly lowering development barriers. Research institutions, startups, universities, and individual developers alike now have access to advanced AI technologies.

In generative AI, more cases are emerging in which open models are used to improve performance or retrain models for specific industries. Open source also underpins the ability to develop customized AI for fields such as medicine, finance, manufacturing, and education. Developers can use open models to cut costs and shorten development time.

The biggest advantage of open source is transparency. Open code allows anyone to examine how a program works. Many developers can also jointly verify errors and security vulnerabilities. It is also seen as a way to reduce dependence on a single company’s technology.

However, there are limitations as well. Because anyone can modify the code, quality may not always be consistent. Some projects also lack clear responsibility for maintenance and upkeep. In some cases, response to security issues can be delayed. In corporate environments, license terms must be reviewed carefully to prevent legal disputes.

In the AI industry, competition between open source and closed models continues. Closed models are those in which companies provide services without disclosing the source code. They emphasize performance and stability. Open source models, meanwhile, are expanding their market reach with openness and scalability as their strengths.

Recently, the global AI ecosystem has been growing rapidly around open source. As a culture of sharing research results and model architectures spreads, the pace of technological advancement is also accelerating. Experts say the competitiveness of the AI industry can grow more through an open collaborative ecosystem than through the monopoly of a single company.

Open source does not mean free software. It is closer to a development philosophy that involves disclosing technology and improving it together. By sharing source code, it helps spread innovation and lowers barriers to technological entry. Even in the age of AI, open source remains a fundamental foundation supporting technological progress and industrial competitiveness.
