Seoul’s Yeongdeungpo District announced on the 21st that it will install escalators at Exit 6 of Mullae Station to enhance subway convenience for residents.
This project requires a total budget of 8.55 billion won, and a total of four escalators will be installed: two two-way escalators and two internal connecting corridor escalators.
The area around Exit 6 of Mullae Station is densely populated with apartment complexes housing more than 1,300 households, leading to a high demand for subway use. However, until now, only stairs were available, causing inconvenience for the elderly, children, and those with mobility challenges. Concerns about safety accidents have also been consistently raised, especially during rush hours.
To alleviate residents’ inconvenience, Yeongdeungpo District has continuously advocated to Seoul City for the installation need, and Seoul Metro signed a construction contract in November last year. After completing preliminary work, such as relocating underground utilities, construction commenced on November 17 of this year.
The construction aims to be completed by May 2027. During the construction period, safety screens will be installed at Exits 6 and 7 of Mullae Station, limiting access. Passengers will need to use Exits 1 or 5 instead.
Once the escalators are completed, it is expected that mobility convenience for residents of Mullae-dong, commuting workers, and those with mobility impairments will be significantly enhanced.
Additionally, the district is installing two two-way escalators at Exit 6 of Sinpung Station on Line 7 to further expand subway convenience. The Sinpung Station project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.
Choi Ho-kwon, the head of Yeongdeungpo District Office, said, “It is meaningful that the long-awaited project to install escalators at Exit 6 of Mullae Station is being actively pursued. We ask for residents’ understanding for any inconvenience during the construction period, and we will strive to complete the project safely and swiftly.”
