The Korea Forest Service (headed by Commissioner Kim In-ho) announced that from the 15th, it will begin trial operations of 17 sections, totaling 244 kilometers (km), of the ‘East-West Trail,’ a long-distance forest trail that allows for backpacking.

The East-West Trail is a long-distance forest path stretching 849 km across 55 sections, from Taean County in Chungcheongnam-do to Uljin County in Gyeongsangbuk-do. Construction began in 2023, and up until this third year, 17 sections covering 244 km have been completed.

The purpose of this trial operation is to introduce the culture of long-distance trails in Korea. Similar to overseas long-distance trails, the aim is to provide a new forest trail culture where people can walk, stay, and experience, creating a new leisure pursuit for the public.

So far, the completed sections are: 20 km at Uljin in 2023; 57 km for sections 1-4 at Taean and 15 km at section 47 in Bonghwa in 2024; and 49 km for sections 9-12 in Hongseong and 103 km for sections 48-54 in Bonghwa and Uljin in 2025.

The Korea Forest Service is not merely copying overseas examples but is developing the trail reflecting Korea’s history, culture, and lifestyle, branding it as the ‘Korean Long-Distance Trail’. It is expected to invigorate rural and coastal villages and contribute to tangible income generation for local residents.

During the trial operation period, user feedback will be gathered to enhance safety management, information provision, and operational management systems. The completion of the forest paths is planned by 2026, with the entire trail set to open in 2027. Post full-opening, the trail aims to attract international tourists and evolve into a world-renowned long-distance trail representing South Korea.

To use shelters for backpacking or to explore restricted sections 52-55, reservations must be made in advance through the ‘Forest e’ website starting at 10 a.m. on the 14th.

Commissioner Kim In-ho stated, “The East-West Trail is a mediator connecting not only the forest paths but also villages and regions,” adding, “By 2027, we aim to present a proud Korean long-distance trail that can stand alongside those worldwide.”
