The Seoul Metropolitan Council’s Planning and Economic Committee approved a resolution urging the establishment of a public medical university at Seoul City University on September 8. The resolution aims to support medically underserved groups and secure local medical talent.
Lee Seung-bok, the Vice Chairman (People’s Power, Yangcheon 4), who proposed the resolution, stated, “The importance of the public healthcare system was highlighted during the COVID-19 crisis and the junior doctors’ strike, yet the 12 municipal hospitals operated by Seoul still face manpower shortages. The establishment of a medical school at Seoul City University is necessary for stable training and supply of public health personnel.”
Chairman Im Chun-dae said, “Seoul City University is the only four-year public university in Korea that has supported Seoul city administration and conducted local government education and research. Establishing a medical school and introducing an equitable regional opportunity selection process can build a public healthcare system through collaboration between Seoul Medical Center and provincial hospitals.”
All members of the Planning and Economic Committee, including Vice Chairman Lee Min-ok (Seongdong 3, Democratic Party of Korea), agreed on the proposal, which passed unanimously.
This resolution is scheduled to be passed at the plenary session on September 12 before being delivered to the Seoul city government, the National Assembly, and the government.
