Education combining historical experience and book art.
The Jung-gu district in Seoul announced on the 1st that it will operate a one-day program at community centers for local elementary school students under the theme, “Our Neighborhood Hero: Meeting Admiral Yi Sun-sin at the Community Center!” in line with the summer vacation.
This program is designed for children in Jung-gu, the hometown and place of growth of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, to understand the life and spirit of the admiral and to instill pride in their local area.
It is targeted at students in grades 2 to 4, with ten children recruited per district. Applications can be made through the Jung-gu Community Center, with priority given to children residing in Jung-gu. The course fee is 1,000 won.
The lectures will be given by instructor Ha Jeong-hye, who is certified in historical essay guidance and book curation and has experience in programs like “Meeting Korean Maritime Heroes through Book Art” and “Elementary History School.”
Classes will introduce related historical sites in Jung-gu such as Inhyeon-dong, the reputed birthplace of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, and the Training Ground site, covering the admiral’s major achievements and lifetime, such as the Battle of Hansan Island. Additionally, activities like creating a “Historical Book Art” project, coloring turtle ship designs, and writing hand letters will be conducted.
This program will commence in Dasandong and Pildong from July 22 and will operate in each district until August 1. The schedule can be checked on Jung-gu’s official website, and further inquiries can be directed to the self-governing administration department of Jung-gu.
A Jung-gu official stated, “Jung-gu is a historical site where Admiral Yi Sun-sin was born and formed his character,” expressing hope that “local children will learn Admiral Yi’s spirit and grow into future leaders.”
