Adobe has officially launched its first AI image generation app for smartphones, “Firefly.” Available on both iOS and Android, the app offers more than just image generation; it includes photo editing, video generation, and integration with Creative Cloud, allowing for comprehensive creative work even in a mobile setting. Adobe emphasized that this release is a crucial step in democratizing AI creation.

The Firefly app allows users to generate desired images simply by entering text into the AI-based app. Popular features such as ‘Generative Fill’ and ‘Generative Expand’ from Adobe Photoshop are also available, making it easy to modify specific parts of an image or expand its size. All projects are automatically synchronized with Adobe’s cloud service, Creative Cloud, enabling creators, designers, and social content producers to continue working on their desktops.

In addition to Adobe’s own models, this app is distinguished by its integration of various third-party AI models from Google, OpenAI, Runway, Ideogram, Flux, and others, allowing the use of over ten AI models, including the Firefly image model 4 and the Firefly video model. Adobe stated that it aims to provide AI experiences tailored to each user’s individual purpose and style.

Adobe has reiterated that its AI model training data only includes images from Adobe Stock and public domain content, differentiating it from competitors who gather arbitrary online content. This point serves as a major advantage for corporate clients who produce commercial content, as it offers them “intellectual property indemnity.” However, Adobe has yet to clarify certain past suspicions that some images were trained using data from Midjourney, prompting calls for improved transparency.

With this app release, Adobe proclaimed the popularization of AI image generation technology. To date, over 24 billion pieces of content have been generated via the Firefly model, showing that AI features have driven new subscriber growth by more than 30% quarterly. The app starts at $10 per month, with additional charges for advanced features and external model use. Adobe plans to expand its creative collaboration tools, such as Firefly Board and video generation functions, in the future.

With Firefly, users can generate, edit, save, and share images and videos all from a single mobile app, indicating that AI technology is moving beyond a mere assistive role to become central to the creative process. Adobe is actively seeking a balance between technology, copyright, and user convenience, as it looks to secure leadership in the new AI ecosystem.
