Ministry of Economy and Finance-Green Climate Fund discuss ways to expand Korean participation and strengthen cooperation

On April 21, Choi Ji-young, Director General of International Economic Affairs, met with Mafalda Duarte, Secretary General of the GCF, at the Government Complex Seoul, to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between Korea and the GCF. The GCF is an international organization established in 2010 to support the reduction of greenhouse gases and adaptation to climate change in developing countries, with its secretariat located in Songdo, Incheon.

The Ministry of Strategy and Finance emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation between Korea and the GCF. They requested interest in the advance of Korean-related entities, such as the designation of certification bodies by the Asian Forest Cooperation Organization (AFoCO).

Additionally, they requested the GCF to expand recruitment and strengthen communication with Korean youth, so that Korean talent from various classes, including senior executives and youth, can actively advance into the GCF.

During the second replenishment period (2024–2027), the GCF expressed gratitude for Korea’s commitment to fulfilling its $300 million contribution and for the continued attention and increased contributions. They also stated their intention to strengthen the relationship with Korea in various ways, beyond the existing cooperation with Korean accredited entities such as the Korea Development Bank, KOICA, and SK Securities.

The Ministry of Strategy and Finance and the GCF agreed to hold annual consultations once a year and to communicate frequently to cooperate closely for the development of the GCF and international climate response efforts.
