Saudi Arabian Intellectual Property Office copyright registrars are experiencing the Korean copyright system and content industry firsthand.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, along with the Korea Copyright Commission, is conducting a training for copyright experts from the Saudi Intellectual Property Office in Seoul from April 14 to 18. The training group is composed of four experts, including Asiri, the head of copyright.

They will learn about various copyright systems such as the copyright registration process in Korea, the system, statutory licensing system, and open-source software policies, and will directly visit the domestic content industry sites.

This training is the first practical cooperation project following the copyright cooperation MOU signed between the two countries last November. The agreement is the first MOU in the copyright sector that Korea has signed with a Middle Eastern country and is considered Saudi Arabia’s first external copyright agreement.

Saudi Arabia has set the intellectual property industry as a key growth engine following its national development strategy, ‘Saudi Vision 2030.’ Accordingly, they are actively strengthening their copyright system and ecosystem.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has dispatched experts from the Copyright Commission to Saudi Arabia from 2019 to 2021, participating in the establishment of local intellectual property strategies.

This training serves as an opportunity for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to expand subsequent cooperation in areas such as the nurturing of copyright professionals between the two countries, tackling illegal copying, and raising awareness of copyright protection.

Jung Hyang-mi, Director of the Copyright Bureau at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said, “This training is an opportunity to directly export Korea’s advanced copyright system and elevate Korea’s status in the global copyright industry.”
