World Wildlife Fund (WWF) conducted the ‘Earth Hour’ campaign from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM on March 22. Now in its 19th year, Earth Hour is an event where the entire world turns off their lights for one hour to raise awareness of the climate crisis and the seriousness of natural destruction.
In Seoul, landmarks such as Gwanghwamun Square’s statues of King Sejong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin, the National Assembly Building, Sungnyemun Gate, the Presidential Blue House, Lotte World Tower, Han River bridges, and YTN Seoul Tower, as well as 63 Square, participated. In Busan, Gwangan Bridge, the Busan Cinema Center, and the UN Memorial Cemetery also turned off their lights. Major public institutions and companies joined the campaign.
Earth Hour, which began in Sydney, Australia in 2007, has grown into the world’s largest nature conservation campaign with participation from over 180 countries.
WWF stated, “Earth Hour is not simply about turning off the lights, but a symbolic act demonstrating global solidarity against the climate crisis.”
