The acorns of the ‘Jonggasi Oak’ tree, known for their exceptional effects in skin regeneration and damage repair, are expected to be utilized in everyday life through technology transfer. The National Institute of Forest Science (Director Kim Yong-gwan) announced on the 13th that it has signed a technology transfer agreement with Bios Co., Ltd. regarding the patent for the extract from Jonggasi Oak acorns.
The Forest Biomaterials Research Center of the National Institute of Forest Science has scientifically proven that the extract of Jonggasi Oak acorns promotes skin cell regeneration, reduces inflammation, and has antioxidant effects. According to the research, the ability of skin cells to proliferate increased by 10% to 40% compared to before. This study, published in the international journal Biology, has been recognized for its reliability.
The Jonggasi Oak, an evergreen broadleaf tree native to Jeju Island and the southern coast, is valued for its scenic beauty, making it popular as a street tree. Notably, its acorns mature in October and are edible. With the scientific validation of its skin improvement effects, the potential for industrial use has increased significantly.

Bios Co., Ltd., which received the technology transfer, plans to develop products such as ointments, creams, toothpaste, and stomach disorder remedies using the extract from Jonggasi Oak acorns. The company aims to address modern skin concerns by offering natural, safe skin care solutions.
Dr. Choi Sik-won of the Forest Biomaterials Research Center at the National Institute of Forest Science stated, “This technology transfer will contribute to the consumer activation of Jonggasi Oak acorns and enhance the industrial value of domestic forest bioresources. We will continue research to identify new income resources for forest and farm households.”
This technology transfer agreement is based on research results aimed at commercialization, including verification of extract stability, prototype production, and registration in the International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary (ICID). The industrial application of Jonggasi Oak acorn’s skin improvement effects is expected to breathe new life into the domestic cosmetics and bio industries.
