The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO, Commissioner Kim Wan-gi) is engaging in dialogue with the industry and academia to enhance the protection of typeface designs. KIPO announced that they will be hosting the ‘Typeface Design Communication+Seminar’ at Moiso Hall, Design House, Jung-gu, Seoul, on March 12 at 1 PM.

This seminar is being held to discuss the protection and development direction of typeface designs in a rapidly changing industrial environment, as it marks the 20th year since typeface designs were included as a subject of protection under the Design Protection Act.

Experts from the typeface design industry and academia will gather at the seminar to share application trends and examination standards and find effective protection measures in a changing market.

KIPO will introduce application trends and examination standards for typeface designs targeting industry stakeholders, including the Korea Font Association. Additionally, there will be presentations from industry experts. Joo Kyung Kim, Chief Researcher at AG Typography Institute, will discuss ‘Development and Expansion of Corporate Exclusive Fonts,’ and Joo Won, PD at Sandoll Inc., will present on ‘Consumer-Led Entertainment Fonts.’ This will be followed by a lecture by Lee Yong-je, Professor of Visual Design at Kaywon University of Art & Design, on ‘Creativity in Hangul Typeface Design.’

Alongside this seminar, KIPO is planning to hold the ‘1st Beautiful Hangul Typeface Design Contest’ to commemorate Hangul Day in October. The office will accept email recommendations for registered designs starting in August, conduct online voting for the public, and expert evaluations to select and award outstanding Hangul typeface designs.

Lee Chun-moo, Director of the Trademark Design Examination Bureau at KIPO, stated, “Through this seminar, we aim to share the current status of the typeface design industry and establish a foundation for cooperation with industry and academia.” He added, “We plan to actively pursue policy and institutional improvements that applicants can experience firsthand,” and urged for interest and participation in the ‘Beautiful Hangul Typeface Design Contest’ scheduled for October.
