The domestic pet plant market has exceeded 2 trillion won. The Rural Development Administration (Director Kwon Jae-han) recently conducted a nationwide survey and announced on the 11th that one in three citizens is raising pet plants, with the related industry scale reaching 2.4215 trillion won.

This survey is the first quantitative research conducted since the concept of pet plants settled. The Rural Development Administration conducted face-to-face surveys on 500 adult men and women nationwide last September to analyze pet plant ownership rates, management methods, and industry size.

According to the survey, 34% of respondents said they are raising pet plants. When converted to the national population, this corresponds to approximately 17.45 million people. By age, those under their 30s had the highest ratio at 37.2%, followed by those in their 60s and older (34.6%), those in their 50s (15.0%), and those in their 40s (13.2%). In particular, the high proportion of young generations raising pet plants suggests that pet plant culture is establishing itself as a new lifestyle.

The pet plant-related industry is estimated to be worth a total of 2.4215 trillion won. Of this, the plant industry itself accounts for 1.1856 trillion won, while related industries like pots, culture soil, and nutrients make up 1.2359 trillion won. The most common place to raise pet plants is indoors, at 90.2%, followed by yards (13.2%), gardens (10.7%), and forests (1.2%). Consequently, the indoor plant-related industry had the largest share at 689 billion won (55.7%).

The Rural Development Administration assessed that the pet plant industry has become a lifestyle culture beyond simple hobbies based on these survey results. They particularly noted the positive emotional effects of raising pet plants and projected further market growth.

Kim Gwang-jin, head of urban agriculture at the Rural Development Administration’s National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science, said, “This survey is the first step for the expansion of pet plant culture and industry,” and added, “We plan to strengthen related research and expand policy support to further vitalize the pet plant industry.”
